Fair Use

Here is the link to the media that I chose: http://ccmixter.org/files/lazztunes07/12238

So the first thought that went into my head while using the Creative Commons Search Engine to search for music was the difficulty I encountered in trying to find a song file that was a high enough quality. To be honest, the quality for a lot of the music that I found was lacking. When I searched “hip-hop”, many of the first songs were not even in the hip-hop/rap genre. I suppose that it serves as a reminder that much of the media that we use on regular basis is actually not available through fair use and we must be careful with how we use material we find online. This process also made me think that it would be very useful if there were better search engines for Creative Commons. The search engine I used was ccmixter.com, and I found the interface confusing and think it could be edited to be much more user friendly. Regarding the purpose for using this song, I am using it to comment on fair use and to start conversation, which should be held as favorable. Additionally, I am not making any copies of this file. As I am up just posting the link to the original page, this should still qualify for fair use.

  1. I think it’s interesting that you left a link instead of putting a picture in. While I understand why it was done, I think you would still be in compliance of the fair use if you put the picture in your blog post, since it isn’t the heart of your blog or being excessively manipulated or making copies. Since you’re linking it and giving credit, you should be fine!
